Rose ruled out [PS2] (uk.videogames.games.yahoo.com)
505 Games has taken the decision to can PS2 frightener Rule of Rose, which was due to launch today.
The game, which featured spooky schoolgirls in peril, was controversial – and sinister for all the wrong reasons – from the outset. Both the Times and (yawn) the Daily Mail had picked up on the game’s supposed risqué elements, each quoting EU Justice Commissioner, Franco Frattini’s knee-jerk calls to limit the availability of “obscene” material to young people. The game itself follows a teenage girl’s attempt to escape an orphanage – a quest that apparently involves her being routinely bound, gagged, buried alive and thrown into the “Filth Room”. And that’s to say nothing of the alleged sexual overtones. Guess we’ll never know for sure now.
None of this appeared to concern the Video Standards Council, who questioned the accuracy of press reports and happily awarded the game a sensible 16+ PEGI rating. Nevertheless the negative pre-launch publicity has proven too much for 505 Games, who issued this statement in trade paper MCV today:
“Following discussions with our retail and publishing partners, 505 Games has taken the decision not to publish Rule of Rose in the UK at this time,”
Oh well, another one bites the dust...
