Heavenly Sword (computerandvideogames.com)

- computerandvideogames.com -

Long red hair, bouncing, barely covered tits and an oversized sword: if nothing else, Heavenly Sword will have the fantasy geek demographic going through the tissues like a flu epidemic.

Still, given how impressive these new screenshots are, we can't see any shame in that.

More interesting still are the new gameplay mechanics. Although a combat-heavy action game at heart, much of the focus is on developing heroine Nariko's skills as the game progresses. So, the more experienced Nariko becomes in battle, the stronger and more extravagant her moves. Best of these are the Super Style moves, ridiculously over-the-top displays that generally involve Nariko bouncing all over the environment, before finishing off with a suitably painful-looking poke to the guts. While we're not expecting anything too complicated, with 1,000-odd moves on offer, there's certainly some depth here.

LOOKS FAMILIAR
One of the more recognisable faces you'll spot in the game (or maybe not, given his mug is usually covered by several million dollars' worth of computer graphics effects) is Andy Serkis, aka Gollum in Lord of the Rings. Not
only does Serkis play bad guy, King Botan, he's also been heavily involved with the writing, casting and directing of action sequences.

While the idea of turning over that level of creative control to a man best known for wearing a special effects leotard and hissing "My preccccioussss!" might sound like madness, it's clearly working out, with Heavenly Sword shaping up to be one of the best-looking games on PS3 so far. We're used to seeing silky smooth combat in one-on-one fighting games like Soul Calibur, but to see that level of slickness in a game where you regularly face off against dozens of enemies at a time is mightily impressive. Now all Sony needs to do is to convince us that Heavenly Sword isn't simply Conan in a dress...
