Boulder Dash Re-Made And Re-Hashed For DS And PSP (cinemablend)

- cinemablend -

10Tackle Studios Mobile is the name of the development studios working on a new Boulder Dash game for the Nintendo DS and PSP. The collaborative co-publishing agreement between 10Tackle Studios AG and First Star Software is hoping the Boulder Dash series will continue to be auspicious, even in the handheld market.

A not-so-simple remake of the double-decade old classic, Boulder Dash, is scheduled for release on Sony and Nintendo’s handheld systems in the second quarter of 2007. Alexandra Gerb, the Managing Director at 10Tackle Studios stated “With Boulder Dash, we are proud to be able to continue one of the oldest and most famous brands in computer games. The tried and true concept has already delighted generations of computer, video game and coin-operated arcade gamers, and now we want to give the brand our own accent by adding a number of innovations designed to take advantage of the capabilities these new platforms have to offer. We want to lend protagonist Rockford's adventures a fresh, modern style to get him into shape for the years to come.”

Even though remakes, re-hashes and sequels have been the mark of success for most gaming publishers, it isn’t quite working with the PSP. While the Nintendo DS doesn’t really need help capturing the audience of the casual market, it’s the PSP that isn’t faring so well when it comes to crossing boundaries. Maybe 10Tackle’s and FSS partnership will help the PSP cross the border between the hardcore gamer and the casual gamer. A string of “casual” games have been released on the PSP, but Nintendo’s DS has already sunk into a niche that spells nothing but S-u-c-c-e-s-s.

But will Boulder Dash be the turning point for the PSP? Will sales sky-rocket to unfathomable heights? Will 10Tackle be the lottery ticket to give Sony that jackpot they’ve been waiting for with the PSP? ...Probably not. But it’ll be nice to see another classic on the new handhelds.
