Ambassador, with all these Metal Slug games etc...

Regular readers will know by now that we love the Metal Slug series quite unconditionally. It barely matters what platform the series turns up on – heck, it even looks good on GBA – but it’s absolutely second to none in terms of the sheer speed and explosive insanity of its gameplay. Got it? Good...

Well today we’re more than a little pleased to be sharing the first pictures of the Wii version of the must-have Metal Slug Anthology, which is apparently heading our way early next year.

As with the forthcoming PSP game Wii Slug Anthology compiles pretty much every game in the 10 year-old series – so that’s Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5 and, as a relatively recent addition, Metal Slug 6. They’re all perfect renditions of their Arcade counterparts too, but then again replicating the somewhat basic 2D graphics isn’t going to stretch, well, any modern gaming system. So what, exactly, is new here?

In short norralot – and certainly not the visuals. SNK Playmore/Ignition are boasting unlockable items, exclusive bonus games, bonus galleries and two player co-op play and an interface that utilises “the unique control method of Wii” and which can “...only enhance the already well-loved and familiar gameplay associated with the series.”

We’re duly intrigued but we’re hoping that SNK doesn’t shoehorn some daft tilt-sensitive control system in just for the sake of making the game Wii-specific. But it hardly matters, really. Every system needs at least one Metal Slug game. But seven in one package is a glittering gift-horse we’re definitely not going to look in the mouth. Wii Metal Slug Anthology is out February 2007.
